For the first time since 1991, a safety from Middle Tennessee has been drafted by an NFL franchise.

Kevin Byard, the ball hawking safety who holds the school record for most interceptions, was taken with the first pick of the third round (64th overall) by the local Tennessee Titans Friday night.

"I am very proud of Kevin for achieving a life-long dream and for the way he has represented Middle Tennessee football," said Head Coach Rick Stockstill in a statement. "He has a degree, been exceptional in the community and been phenomenal on the field. I have no doubt he will have a long and successful career in the NFL because of his work ethic and how he will represent the organization and city."

Byard's selection was the second highest draft pick in program history behind former WR Tyrone Calico, who also went to the Titans, but in the 2nd round.

Considered a snub for the NFL Combine, Byard turned heads with an exceptional Pro Day for Middle Tennessee, which vaulted his stock according to many "experts" around the league.

That performance started a whirlwind process of interviews and workouts for the four-year starter, culminating with Friday's selection.

Many league pundits had Byard pegged to go anywhere between the 2nd and 6th rounds of the draft, but the Titans did not want to take the chance of waiting.

Always subdued and humbled by success, Byard - a former 2-star prospect with Rivals.com - took to Twitter to express his excitement over his selection.
